Hi Aunt Vadge,

Is laser hair removal on the vagina safe?

Curious

Dear Curious,

Yes – though nobody actually lasers the vagina itself. There’s no hair up inside, and the laser stays well away from the mucous membranes. What gets treated is the hair on the outside: your pubic mound, your outer labia and around the back. That lases away beautifully.

It really all comes down to who’s holding the machine. You want someone who does this every day, not a fresh graduate making their early mistakes on your bits – the skin down there is thin and easily upset, so it needs a gentle hand on low settings.

The thing that doesn’t get talked about enough is matching the laser to your skin tone: laser works off the contrast between dark hair and paler skin, so the wrong machine on richer or darker skin can burn or leave light or dark patches.

A good clinic will know which laser suits you and will do a patch test first, so do ask them which one they use and why.

Worst case is usually a burn or a temporary colour change, and happily the vulva heals fast and tends not to leave a trace. Afterwards, keep it cool, dodge the sun for a day or two, and don’t put anything stinging on it.

So go for it – just pick an experienced clinic, ask about the laser and a patch test, and you’ll be in good hands. If you’re weighing up hair removal in general, there’s more in our piece on pubic hair.

Warmest regards,
Aunt Vadge
