Hi Aunt Vadge,
I just finished shaving and noticed some redness on the inner hood of my clitoris, like a little tear – not even a centimetre, maybe a quarter of that. Was it because I was pulling it back too far? Should I be concerned, or will it heal on its own?
Yours,
Cut Hood, USA

Dear Cut Hood,
Don’t worry at all – a tiny tear like that on the clitoral hood will heal up very quickly on its own. The hood is attached to your labia and the skin there is delicate, so it tears easily at the connecting edges, even just from being pulled the wrong way while shaving. You’ve done nothing wrong.
Be gentle and careful next time, and it can help to take a photo of your vulva so you can see what’s going on in more detail. The diagram here shows the basic idea, though everyone’s vulva looks a little different.
To keep it comfortable while it heals, you can smooth a small amount of a plain lubricating oil (olive, coconut or pawpaw ointment), or a vulva-friendly cuts cream, over the area after bathing, just to keep the skin moving freely. You don’t need much at all. Warm water only, and skip anything scented until it’s settled.
If it hasn’t healed in a week or so, starts to bleed or weep, or gets more sore, have it looked at – but I’d be surprised if it doesn’t sort itself out quickly.
Write back anytime.
