Aunt Vadge: I think I have my first yeast infection

Dear Aunt Vadge,

I’ve been on antibiotics for a sinus infection for about a week, and recently had food poisoning and got really dehydrated. Around the same time I had sex with my boyfriend. Now my clitoris feels sort of mushy, I feel ‘lower’, and there’s loads of discharge – I’m thinking it’s a yeast infection.

I’m very holistic so I want to use boric acid. I’ve never had one and I’ve been crying for an hour, I’m so scared.

Yours,
S

Dear S,

Oh love, please dry those tears – I promise you’re going to be completely fine. A first yeast infection feels alarming, but this is one of the most common, most harmless things that can happen, and you even know exactly why it’s happened.

A week of antibiotics wipes out a lot of the friendly bacteria that normally keep yeast in check, so the yeast quietly blooms. That’s all this is, not an invader, just your own normal yeast overgrowing because its competition got knocked back.

Add the dehydration and a bit of friction from sex, and the timing makes total sense.

To settle it down, boric acid vaginally is a good holistic choice and usually works well – with two firm safety rules: never swallow it (it’s toxic taken by mouth, vaginal use only), and don’t use it if there’s any chance you could be pregnant, so since you had sex recently, just be sure on that point first (see our boric acid fact sheet).

Help your gut too, since the same antibiotics hit your digestive flora – a probiotic containing the yeast-fighting Saccharomyces boulardii (in refrigerated probiotics) supports the reset – cut back on carbs and sugar for a few days because yeast feeds on them, rehydrate properly after that food poisoning, and skip the pharmacy antifungals if you can, since overusing them breeds resistant yeast the same way overusing antibiotics breeds resistant bacteria.

There are more gentle options on our yeast infections page, and your body will largely right itself within a few days – you’re just helping it along.

If it hasn’t settled in a few days, see your doctor for a culture to confirm it’s yeast (and not something else). But truly, this is normal, common and temporary. You haven’t done anything wrong.

Best,
Aunt Vadge
