Cut or scratch on your labia before a bike ride: what to do

Hi Aunt Vadge,

I’ve scratched the edge of my vagina and it hurts. How do I fix this – I have to ride a bike tomorrow!

Dear Scratched,

There’s no overnight fix for a scratch or cut on the labia, but you can absolutely make tomorrow’s ride comfortable enough. The whole game is cushioning the area and cutting down friction.

Wear padded cycling shorts if you can beg, borrow or buy a pair – the chamois pad is made for exactly this. A gel seat cover or a wider, softer saddle helps too, and so does sitting a touch more upright so less of your weight goes through the tender bits. Do a quick practice sit before you set off.

Smear a little plain barrier ointment or chamois cream over the scratch first, so the fabric glides rather than rubs. If it’s more of a genuine little cut than a surface scratch, Aunt Vadge’s Delicate Cuts Cream is made to help labial cuts heal. Afterwards, rinse the sweat off and pat dry, wear breathable cotton the rest of the time, and it should heal on its own within a few days. In our clinical experience, little labial scratches and splits usually mend fast (here’s more on little cuts around the vaginal entrance).

If it’s really sore, a numbing cream from the pharmacy counter can take the edge off for the ride – external skin only, and don’t let it mask a bigger problem.

Get it looked at if it’s actually bleeding a lot, gaping open, or hasn’t healed within a week or so – but a simple scratch shouldn’t need any of that.
