Bifidobacterium breve in the vagina and urinary tract

Commensal gut bacteria, probiotic, unclear of impact in the vagina

JL notes

I have never seen a healthy vaginal microbiome with this bacteria in it. Tends to be quite dominant, 30-60%, when present. Why? Produces lactic acid (LAB),

B. breve in UTI

  • Not widely associated with urinary tract infections
  • Some scientific reports speculating that this family of bacteria might be linked to a handful of UTI cases.

Microbiome provider says, “We do not normally see significant levels of this species in healthy urine samples. However, we have seen some symptomatic donors with above 100,000 cells/mL of this species but it is hard to know if this is causative. Little is known about the effect this bacteria might have on the vaginal microbiome.”
