Klebsiella granulomatis in urinary tract and vulvovaginal infections

Klebsiella granulomatis is a bacteria found predominantly in Papua New Guinea, Australia, South Africa, the Caribbean and parts of India and South America (namely Brazil). The condition K. granulomatis causes is called granuloma inguinale, which causes inflammation and scarring of genitals.

These sores are slow to heal and can leave severe scarring. The sores can appear on and in the vulva, vagina, anus, buttocks (for those having anal sex), face or other areas. Infection can rarely occur in internal organs.

Antibiotics therapy is typically trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole or doxycycline by mouth for at least three weeks. All sexual partners must be treated.

Treatment tends to start working in about a week from the first dose, however, it can take much longer if the infection has moved to the lymph glands in the groin. Lumps may reappear.

Checkups are required twice yearly.
