Lactobacillus casei is commonly found in the human intestine, mouth and vagina, complementing the growth of Lactobacillus acidophilus. Lactobacillus casei is often used in the dairy industry as a part of ripening cheddar cheese and green olives. Lactobacillus casei is also used in fermenting beans to reduce flatulence-inducing components.
Lactobacillus casei is understood to be a probiotic bacteria, particularly for digestive tract infections, such as Clostridium difficile infections. Lactobacillus casei is thought to be a suitable treatment for diarrhoea and an anti-pathogenic probiotic bacteria.
Lactobacillus casei may be able to inhibit biofilm formation by pathogenic bacteria.
