Peptoniphilus grossensis in the vagina

Does not use sugars, but peptone and amino acids as major sources of energy. Isolated from human specimens such as vaginal discharge, ovarian, peritoneal, sacral and lacrymal gland abscesses, while also a cause of summer mastitis in cows​1​.

Produces butyrate​2​.

  • Peptonum = peptone
  • Philus = from Greek, philos, meaning friend, loving
  • Friend of peptone, due to using peptone as a major energy source.​2​
