Prevotella intermedia was formerly known as Bacteroides intermedius. P. intermedia is involved in mouth infections (ulcerative gingivitis) and is commonly found in mouth abscesses.
P. intermedia is found more in pregnant women, since it uses steroid hormones to grow. Women with bacterial vaginosis have also had P. intermedia isolated from their vaginas.
