Hi Aunt Vadge,

My boyfriend fingered me (no sperm on his hand). It started to hurt a few minutes later. I’m supposed to get my period but it hasn’t come, and I get cravings a lot. Does fingering affect your body?

Sincerely,
Affected

Dear Affected,

Fingering can’t affect your body’s workings like your period or your digestion – it’s just a physical touch, like a massage or scratching an itch – so it hasn’t delayed your period or caused your cravings.

What it can affect is your vagina itself, which is why it started to hurt a few minutes later: that’s most likely a small graze or tear from your boyfriend being a bit too rough, or going in before you were fully aroused.

So the soreness is friction, not a sign anything’s wrong with your cycle.

Your late period and cravings are a separate, ordinary thing: as your period approaches, your hormones shift, and that’s what brings on cravings and often a bit of unpredictability in timing – periods run on ovulation, which stress, travel or just life can push a few days later, with no pregnancy involved (and with no sperm anywhere near, there’s nothing to be pregnant from here anyway).

So for the soreness, be gentle, use plenty of lube and arousal next time, keep nails short, and our fingering-basics guide is worth a read together.

And for the late period, it’ll very likely arrive in its own time – if it ever stretches out a long way or you’re unsure, a home test settles it, but from what you’ve described there’s nothing to worry about.

There’s more on whether pain and bleeding after fingering is normal.

Warmest regards,
Aunt Vadge
