Pediococcus acidilactici in the vagina

Pediococcus acidilactici is a lactic-acid producing bacteria typically found in the human digestive tract as a beneficial commensal1. P. acidilactici is considered a probiotic bacteria2.

P. acidilactici has good adherence qualities to epithelial cells and exhibits antimicrobial activity against some gram-positive and gram-negative pathogens such as Listeria monocytgenes, Salmonella enterica, Shigella sonnei, Klebsiella oxytoca, Enterobacter cloacae and Streptococcus pyogenes1.

P. acidilactici does not cause rupture of red blood cells (haemolysis) or degradation of proteins using proteinase (trypsin), while producing acid.

P. acidilactici has been studied across multiple platforms, from multiple sclerosis research to food science.3

  • Grows in a range of pH, temperature and osmotic pressure4
  • Colonises the digestive tract4
  • Commonly found in fermented vegetables, fermented dairy products, and meat5
  • Viable at very low pH, but grows best at a pH of 6.2
  • Antagonistic against other microorganisms including pathogens via secretion of lactic acid and bacteriocins (peidocins)6

Beneficial qualities of P. acidilactici

  • Probiotic used to treat constipation and diarrhoea, stress, and enhancing immune responses in birds and small animals
  • Human trials are still limited, but P. acidilactici prevents small intestinal colonisation of pathogens in small animals
  • Dogs with digestive problems have been treated with P. acidilactici and Saccharomyces bouldardii for parvovirus, and after vomiting and bloody diarrhoea, three days’ treatment saw the dogs with solid stools
  • Normalises dogs’ intestinal microflora after antibiotic therapy, when taken with antibiotics
  • No known toxic effects
