Did I hurt my hymen masturbating? (Probably not)

Dear Aunty Vadge,

I’d been exploring my body for a while. A couple of months ago I started inserting one finger (before it was only the clitoris). The other day I tried two fingers, and then it really started to burn around the edges. I looked with a mirror and I think I ripped my hymen – or at least the outermost part that surrounds everything. Did I hurt myself?

You almost certainly haven’t done any real harm – this is the most normal thing in the world when you go from one finger to two. The burning ‘around the edges’ is just the delicate tissue at your vaginal opening (and possibly your hymen) stretching a bit more than it’s used to. It’s a graze, not an injury.

And on the hymen specifically: it stretching or thinning isn’t damage or anything to mourn. It’s normal, flexible tissue that gives way gradually with use – a little burning or even a spot of blood as it stretches is expected and harmless.

For next time, so it doesn’t sting

Use lube – it’s the single biggest thing for making two fingers comfortable instead of burny.
Get properly aroused first – when you’re turned on, the tissue softens and the opening relaxes, so it stretches far more easily.
Build up gradually – make sure one finger feels totally easy before adding a second, and go slowly.
Let it rest a few days to heal before going again.

The good news is that vulval and vaginal tissue heals quickly and without scarring, so this’ll settle on its own. Only see a doctor if the burning doesn’t ease within a few days, it bleeds a lot, or you notice signs of infection (increasing pain, swelling, pus). Otherwise – be gentle, lube up, and keep exploring.
