Aunt Vadge: is this a fingering wound or my period?

Hi Aunt Vadge,

I was fingered for the first time (I’m a virgin). It hurt a little while it was happening, and I started bleeding afterwards, on and off for two days, then it spotted and cleared. A day later I started bleeding again, but darker – and I’m due to start my period soon. Am I on my period, or is something wrong?

Yours,
Bleeding

Dear Bleeding,

This all fits together, and nothing sounds wrong – almost certainly two separate things happened back to back, a small graze from the fingering and then your period arriving right on cue.

The first bleeding lines up perfectly with first-time fingering: the tissue at the entrance is delicate and easily nicked by friction (especially without much lube or warm-up). So it bleeds a little, then settles within a day or two, exactly your pattern.

The darker blood a day later is the bit confusing you, but that’s actually the clue it’s your period – dark blood is just older blood that’s taken a little longer to make its way out. This is completely normal at the very start of a period.

A quick way to tell them apart in future: graze-bleeding tends to be bright or pinkish, brief, and tied to the act itself, while a period is darker, builds into a proper flow, and comes with the usual cramps and cycle timing.

And one myth to put down gently: first-time bleeding isn’t a marker of ‘virginity’. It’s just a small stretch or graze of delicate tissue – plenty of people don’t bleed at all, and it says nothing about you (more on that here if you’re curious).

For next time, so there’s no graze at all: plenty of lube, take time to get properly aroused first (the tissue gets plumper and stretchier), short smooth nails, and tell your fingerer to go gently; our guide to cuts and tears from fingering has more. When would I actually get checked?

If you ever bleed heavily and it won’t stop, soak through pads, get recurring bleeding unrelated to your period or sex, or pain that worsens rather than settles – but none of that is what you’ve described.

Best,
Aunt Vadge
