PASSED: Free abortions sailing to Guatemala for five days

TL;DR

An abortion ship, operated by Women on Waves in collaboration with local organisations, is offering free, legal medical abortions to Guatemalan women up to 10 weeks pregnant. Amidst the country’s restrictive abortion laws, this initiative aims to reduce the high number of unsafe abortions and their complications, which are a leading cause of maternal death in Guatemala. The service includes outreach and educational workshops, emphasizing the importance of safe abortion access.

An abortion ship is to provide free abortion services to women under 10 weeks pregnant off the harbour of Puerto San Jose at Marina Pez Vela. This service is being provided free of charge to Guatemalan women with unwanted pregnancies by Women on Waves in collaboration with Guatemalan organisations.

Free, legal medical abortions can be provided up until 10 weeks of pregnancy after sailing into international waters 12 miles off Guatemala. Women in need of help can call (502) 4845 6767.

Currently, Guatemalan law states that an abortion is only allowed to save a woman’s life. This means that an estimated 65,000 illegal and unsafe abortions take place in Guatemala every year, with over 21,000 women hospitalised with complications.

Complications that arise from unsafe abortions are the third cause of maternal death in Guatemala.

Women who need help can call +50222786724, and don’t worry if it’s too late – Women on Waves can still help you with a safe medical abortions.

Furthermore, during this week, the participants will conduct workshops on medical abortion for women, young women and activists interested to join in. Please click here to donate for the abortion ship.
