Aunt Vadge: can I use evening primrose oil for vaginal atrophy?

Hi Aunt Vadge,

I’ve read that evening primrose oil gel caps inserted vaginally are good for vaginal dryness. My concern is whether the capsule would dissolve in the vagina, since they’re meant to be taken orally. Thank you.

Sincerely,
R.

Hi R,

Quick answer to your actual question: yes, the capsule will dissolve. Oil supplements come in gelatin capsules (animal collagen), and gelatin melts at body temperature – so popped in the vagina, it’ll soften and release the oil just fine. There’s no harm in using gelatin caps this way, unless you happen to be sensitive or allergic to the capsule or its contents. (If yours are vegetable capsules, they behave differently – here’s the rundown on capsule types.)

So mechanically, you’re fine. Now let me give you the honest part, because I’d rather you go in with realistic expectations.

What evening primrose oil can and can’t do here

As a vaginal emollient, evening primrose oil can genuinely soothe and lubricate the surface – its active component, GLA (an omega-6 fatty acid), is anti-inflammatory and supports mucous membranes, so many people find it comforting for everyday dryness. That’s a real, useful benefit.

But I’ll be straight with you: the evidence for it specifically treating vaginal atrophy is limited and inconclusive. And that matters because of your age. At 52, persistent dryness is usually genitourinary syndrome of menopause – the tissue thins and loses elasticity because oestrogen has dropped. An oil sitting on the surface can ease the discomfort, but it doesn’t reverse that underlying tissue change. In other words, it treats the symptom, not the cause.

So by all means use it for soothing relief – it’s safe and may well feel lovely. Just pair it with addressing the actual driver if this is menopausal atrophy. If you’d like a plan that tackles the root of it (and works out what’ll genuinely restore comfort and resilience), you can book an appointment with one of our practitioners.

Best,
Aunt Vadge
