Aunt Vadge: water or urine after ThermiVa treatments

Hi Aunt Vadge,

I had ThermiVa (vaginal radiofrequency) done yesterday. Ever since, I’ve had what looks like water – or urine? – dripping out. It has no odour and doesn’t hurt, but I’ve had to wear a panty liner so I don’t look like I’ve wet myself. It’s not a lot, but it’s not normal for me. I thought this helps with incontinence? I’ve also got a tiny bit of blood still. I’m kind of freaking out – what’s going on?

Sincerely,
J.

Hi J,

Breathe – what you’re describing is the expected aftermath of a radiofrequency treatment, not a sign something’s gone wrong. Two reassuring clues you’ve given me: it’s odourless and painless. Urine smells, and infection usually hurts or smells off – so this is much more likely simple treatment discharge.

Here’s the why: radiofrequency heats the deeper layer of tissue (under the surface) to stimulate it. As that tissue responds and heals, it weeps a little clear, serous fluid – which is exactly the watery leak you’re noticing. The tiny bit of blood is minor spotting from the same thing. Both are common in the first 72 hours or so and then settle down.

And it doesn’t mean the treatment isn’t working for your incontinence – that benefit comes later, as the tissue remodels over the following weeks. The immediate watery discharge is a separate, short-lived healing response.

That said, the people who know their treatment best are the clinic that did it, so do give them a quick call – partly for reassurance, partly so it’s on record. And call promptly if things shift the other way: heavy bleeding, a foul smell, fever, increasing pain, or a sudden gush of fluid. None of that is what you’ve described, but they’re the signals worth acting on.

You’re almost certainly fine – this is your body doing exactly what it should after the procedure.

Best,
Aunt Vadge
