Hi Aunt Vadge,
I was with a guy using his hands on me, which was enjoyable. After the fun was done, I felt a little sore down there, and the next day I felt sore too. I was also supposed to get my period that day.
The soreness should go away, right? I am feeling cramps in my legs and thighs, and I feel like my period should be coming soon, but this wouldn’t delay my period, would it?
Please help,

Thank you for your letter, Worried. Your question is very valid – can sexual activity affect your period, or any other part of your menstrual cycle? The short and simple answer is no, not in your situation.
Sexual activity does have several effects on the body, but the short-term chemical and hormonal response your body has1 doesn’t impact your other, long-acting hormones like estrogen and progesterone.
It sounds very much like your period is imminent, based on your symptoms.
Can orgasm ‘bring on a period’?
The act of orgasming causes contractions of your vaginal and cervical tissues, which may cause the expulsion of some uterine lining (menstrual blood or period) if it was ready to come out anyway.
This orgasm isn’t ‘bringing on your period’, as hormonal signals drive your period, but merely help it to exit the body. Orgasms near or during your period are not harmful and can be very relaxing, and soothe menstrual cramps.2
Understanding the pain
Worried, you also mention pain during and after your experience. You seem to be experiencing a lack of proper sexual arousal and an overabundance of unsophisticated technique by your partner.
I recommend you both read this article written for inexperienced men, which covers all the basics. Sexual touch is something that needs to be practised; nobody is good at it without guidance.
Where to get help
If your symptoms worsen or new symptoms develop, see a healthcare provider. If you want some advice on sex, you can always book with a sex therapist or coach, or check out some great educational videos on line for free. There’s plenty of information out there!
Thanks for your great question!
Warmest wishes,
Aunt Vadge
