Aunt Vadge: Pain after fingering

Hi Aunt Vadge,

I let a guy finger me. I was still a virgin and told him not to go too deep. He obliged, but was really rough, and after a while it started to hurt, because of friction – I think I wasn’t wet enough. We did this for two days, and on the second day I asked him to stop. There was no blood, though I was a little sore afterwards.

Today I felt funny down there, a bit like just before my period. I checked in a mirror and looked wider than usual, but no blood. Ten minutes later there was a little clump of fresh blood right outside my vagina. I cleaned it up, and over the next while there were a few more small clumps when I wiped. My period isn’t due for another 17 days. Did my hymen break from all the strain?

Yours, Sore and Confused

Dear Sore and Confused,

What you are describing sounds very much like a small friction graze from rough, dry fingering, rather than anything alarming. Two days of firm rubbing without enough lubrication is more than enough to make the delicate tissue at and just inside the entrance sore and a little raw, and small grazes like that can ooze a bit of blood for a day or so, often in little clumps once it has had time to clot. It may be partly hymenal too, but the friction is the main event here.

The fix is to let it settle: no more fingering or sex until it has healed, keep the area clean and dry, and rinse with plain water when it stings. There is a full guide in how to deal with cuts and tears from fingering, and more on the bleeding itself in blood after fingering – is it normal?

When it heals up, the way to avoid a repeat is more arousal and a good lubricant, and a partner who goes gently – see pain after fingering – is it normal? Fingering should not be rough enough to draw blood.

When to get it checked

See a doctor or sexual-health clinic if the bleeding gets heavier rather than lighter, carries on beyond a couple of days, or comes with worsening pain, swelling or signs of infection. A graze should be feeling better within a few days, not worse. In our clinic, friction soreness like this is one of the most common things we hear about, and it nearly always settles with a bit of rest and gentleness.

Warmest regards,
Aunt Vadge
