Fertility

Having a solid grasp on what fertility is means you can figure out what your options are for preventing pregnancy and also for trying to get pregnant if you want to.

Premature ovarian failure (or insufficiency)

Premature ovarian failure is the loss of ovarian function, which can occur for a few different reasons, but ultimately results in a (possibly temporary) loss of fertility.

Hypothalamic amenorrhoea

This is the medical name for no periods, but your periods have stopped due to three specific causes - being too skinny, over-exercising, and stress. These all affect your HPO HPA axes, and interfere with your body's ability to have a normal menstrual cycle.

Withdrawal bleeding

We explain why you are told to take a 7-day break from the contraceptive pill, ring or patch, and what bleeding in the middle of your cycle means when using hormone therapy.

The HPO and HPA axes

The HPO and HPA axes are two critical feedback loops that govern our stress response and the intricate hormonal interplays of the menstrual cycle.

Cystic teratomas and dermoid cysts – ovarian

A dermoid cyst is a growth in the ovary that contains hair, teeth, bone, and other tissue. A dermoid cyst is not a pregnancy, but a tumour.

Kallmann syndrome

Kallmann syndrome is a genetic disorder characterised by lessened or no sense of smell and late/no puberty. Girls with Kallmann syndrome may fail to get their period and have very small breasts, with both boys and girls with this condition likely to have other abnormalities present.

Hirsutism

Hirsutism is excess hair growth in a male pattern, in women, often caused by an underlying hormonal condition.

Understanding adrenal PCOS

Sometime the excess androgens involved in PCOS are produced by the adrenal glands, not the ovaries, which makes PCOS caused by the adrenals a bit different to regular PCOS. Find out how to deal with adrenal-androgen excess.

Could your thyroid be stopping you from managing PCOS?

Thyroid problems and PCOS can both interfere with ovulation, causing infertility. How can you tell which you have?

What is insulin resistance?

Insulin resistance is where the cells of your body become resistant to the effects of the hormone insulin.
