Sore and itchy after rough fingering: is it normal?

Hi Aunt Vadge,

Yesterday a guy came over and things escalated to fingering (no sex – I don’t do that unless we’re dating). He sometimes went too hard; I’d say ‘ouch’ and he’d stop. I’m not a virgin but I’m still new to all this.

The day after, my vagina felt sore, a bit sensitive and itchy. Is that normal? We didn’t have sex. I just want to make sure it’s okay.

Dear Newbie,

Nothing to worry about – this is friction, plain and simple. When fingering gets rough (or you’re not quite wet enough, and sometimes even when you are), nails and dry rubbing can scrape the delicate top layer of skin inside and around the entrance.¹

It ends up feeling like a shaving rash: sore, a bit raw, a bit itchy as it heals. Just what you’d expect from what you’ve described.

Leave it be for a few days – no fingering or sex while it settles – wash with plain water, dab on a little coconut oil if it helps, and stick to cotton undies. It’ll feel normal again within a few days.

Keep half an eye on the itch, though: if it hangs around after the soreness has gone, or you get odd discharge, the friction may have tipped your balance and brought on a touch of thrush, which is easily sorted.²

For next time, it’s all in the technique: plenty of lube, get properly turned on first, short smooth nails, and – the one that really matters – tell him what to do. You’re a bit more experienced than him, whatever he reckons, so it’s on you to say ‘softer’, ‘slower’, ‘like this’.
