Aunt Vadge: my vagina doesn’t get wet

Dear Aunt Vadge,

My vagina barely secretes any liquid. I get a bit wet, then it dries up within two minutes and gets sticky, even when I’m fingering myself. During sex I feel horny and feel like I need to pee all the time, but the whole area just doesn’t get wet – only very small amounts. What do I do? Should I change my diet?

Yours,

Hi S,

This is a really good question, and at 26 the answer is usually different from the dryness people talk about at menopause. You’re clearly getting aroused, so this is much more likely a blood-flow issue than a hormone one – and once you understand the mechanism, the fixes make sense.

Vaginal lubrication isn’t really a ‘secretion’ like saliva; it’s fluid that weeps through the vaginal walls when blood rushes to the area during arousal. And the whole thing runs on nitric oxide, which relaxes smooth muscle and opens up blood vessels so blood, and therefore moisture, floods in.

If that nitric-oxide and blood-flow step is sluggish, you can feel completely turned on in your head but stay dry physically – exactly what you’re describing. (And that ‘need to pee’ sensation during sex is totally normal too: it’s the internal clitoris and g-spot pressing near your urethra when you’re aroused, not a problem.)

So what to try. Feed the nitric-oxide pathway, which is built from the amino acid L-arginine, so L-arginine-rich foods (nuts, seeds, legumes) or an L-arginine supplement can help – L-arginine-based formulas have improved female sexual function and lubrication in clinical trials, just read the warnings on any supplement and check it’s right for your health.

Stay well hydrated, since lubrication is mostly water and even slight dehydration shows up here. Give arousal more time, because the blood-flow build-up isn’t instant and slow, unhurried warm-up lets the lubrication actually arrive. Check your contraception, since a hormonal pill is a very common and overlooked cause of reduced lubrication and libido, worth raising with your doctor if the timing fits.

And use lube with zero shame – natural lubrication varies hugely day to day, plenty of perfectly healthy women use it every time, and it’s a tool, not a failure. Have a read of our fuller guide on dryness during good sex too. Start with the blood-flow basics; I suspect that’s where your answer is.

Tell me how you go.

Best,
Aunt Vadge
