Hi Aunt Vadge,
So almost three weeks ago I had rough sex which resulted in a tear at the back of my vagina. At the time it looked quite bad and swollen, but since then the swelling and pain has subsided, however I am left with a nasty tear still. The wound has never bled and doesn’t seem to be an open wound, although I’m scared that my vagina won’t return back to normal and I’ll be left with this open tear forever!!
I have been trying to research it and it seems to be a first-degree tear, however I am unsure of the difference between first and second degree! I phoned my healthcare provider at the time and their only advice to me was keep it clean, take baths and refrain from sex, however, I am doing all this and the tear is still there. I’m getting quite worried and need some advice.

Dear Worried,
Your tear sounds concerning and I suggest you go and be examined by a nurse or doctor, at your local sexual health clinic or doctor. Having tears that not only don’t bleed, but stick around may mean something unusual is going on.
Sorry I can’t be more help, but sometimes tears need a doctor, and we can’t do much from here. You can look through our vaginal fissures page for home care and help strategies for after you’ve seen a practitioner.
Write anytime!
Warmest regards,
Aunt Vadge
